School Activities

Crafting Unforgettable Cycling Journeys Since 1998

Let’s shape the future together!

Australian Statistics state that 73% of cycling accidents do not involve another entity, just 1 person making a mistake. Our in school program is backward engineered from statistics to address the most common causes of incidents.

Our in school program is designed to be simple, fun and effective to complement basic bike-ED. Our inclusive activities help develop skills for all abilities including non riders. We use a range of props to simulate different scenarios that help all riders from beginners to more advanced, all within a small space without leaving your school grounds.

The best part of our in-school program is that it is easy for teaching staff as we do not leave the school grounds, you don’t need parental consent forms nor do your school staff need any bike-ED training or bike related skills.

We can provide bikes or have one of our mechanics complete a roadworthy on each student’s bike during the first module. We come complete with all the equipment to run a challenging event but most importantly, the kids finish having fun learning the skills to ride safely in their community.

The ultimate goal of the program is to improve skills to become competent to ride safely and independently anywhere.

Objectives of program is to enable students to be able to:

  • Check Equipment, roadworthy and adjustment
  • Basic to advanced handling skills
  • Route planning safe options and how to navigate urban environments
  • Preparing for Traffic and weather conditions
  • Self and external risk identification and avoidance

Session 1. I Can Ride

Before we ride, we coach all kids about helmet fitting and checking bikes for roadworthy. Here we have a mechanic available to fix participants’ bikes or you can use bikes provided by us.

We then move onto a basic set of skills that include stopping, starting and manoeuvring with some fun games. If we have non riders in the group, our staff come alive, in fact it takes usually only about 15 mins to teach people to ride. Only 15 minutes to achieve a huge life skill.

Session 2. Control

In session 2 we recap on session 1 then build more advanced skills in control, braking, which include accurate wheel placement, looking behind, one handed manoeuvring. We also begin to take on risk when riding and mixing with traffic and with other road users, this includes route planning. This session includes the first 4 of our 7 steps of safe riding.

Session 3. 3D

Now we take it up a notch with 3D training and introduce the remaining 3 of the 7 steps.
The last 3 steps eliminate 73% of accidents by riding rough terrain.

With 3D activities we introduce ramps and rollers etc. that challenge but also prepare everybody for real life changing terrain and uneven surfaces, these are also the most fun for participants. Some games and scenarios will finish

This short video shows a program that was delivered on the venue oval, 4 sessions per day with about 20 kids in each group.

We set up a small area on the Saint Leonards grounds during their open day fete, This was not a full activity but demonstrates how we can adapt programs to small areas. how small the area required to deliver a skills activity.

What happens after the initial program?

The next 3 activities beyond the core program are Out of school programs (4-6). We will need to process parental consent forms and participate during the events, so a little more work for school staff but worth the effort.

Session 4. Ride your community

This activity delivered withins close proximity to the school and is planned to familiarise students with what is available by bike, the small laneways and bike tracks but also addresses less ideal roads and how to navigate or avoid them

Session 5 Active Transport

We help students with planning a ride to a destination. We share the tools that are available to find a route, planning and delivering a more comprehensive ride building on Ride your Community. This activity can be a half or full day event and include other forms of public transport including trains or ferries blended in

Session 6 Hero day

This is the big day out where we ride a more challenging distance, This event can be a transport out and ride back to school. After this event, all participants should be able to plan and navigate a ride including other forms of transport if possible safely
