Since 1986, bikeNOW has been a cornerstone of Melbourne’s cycling community, with a rich history rooted in a genuine passion for cycling. As a leading bicycle retail store, bikeNOW has not only been a hub for cycling enthusiasts but has also played a pivotal role in shaping the cycling landscape in Australia.
The journey began in 1998 when bikeNOW ventured into the outdoor realm, laying the foundation for Mountain Bike Tourism in Victoria. In the aftermath of the insurance crisis post-Sept 11, bikeNOW, as an industry leader, took on the responsibility of developing operating standards for cycling in the wilderness for Australia, known as ORCA.
Navigating the challenges of Mountain biking in the wilderness requires expertise, and bikeNOW was well aware of the complexities involved. With a dedication to cycling and a genuine passion for people discovering Mountain Bike riding, bikeNOW set the future standard for safe and enjoyable wilderness cycling.
The impact of bikeNOW’s commitment to excellence extended beyond the operating standards. La Trobe Uni Mt Buller entrusted bikeNOW with developing a curriculum and lesson plans to ensure future guides met the ORCA standards. For five years, bikeNOW delivered the course, contributing to the growth and professionalism of the industry.
Victoria Police recognized bikeNOW’s expertise and approached them to develop a cycling program for policing on bikes. What initially began as an initiative to help Bike Patrol members ride like professionals during the Commonwealth Games evolved into a comprehensive program focusing on effective policing and specialised skills required for policing with bicycles. The program, in collaboration with the Bicycle Co-ordination Unit, continues to run successfully, making a lasting impact.
Taking their passion for cycling global, bikeNOW expanded to Europe, giving rise to bikeNOWeurope. Offering boutique tours during the Australian winter, the team of industry professionals help enthusiasts explore the terrains through Europe between the Atlantic and the Adriatic, delivering epic rides through the big mountains, including routes that follow the Tour de France.
